LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles has officially started the final two-year stretch to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the city’s organizing committee is now looking for a very large crew to help run them.
LA28 said Tuesday, July 14, that Games-time volunteer applications are open for the first time. The private organizing committee says it wants up to 60,000 volunteers for the event, which will make Los Angeles the third city to host three Olympic Games, after 1932 and 1984. It will also be the city’s first Paralympic Games.
What the volunteer program is
LA28 describes volunteers as part of the front line of the Games. In its announcement, the organization said, “Every great production needs a crew.”
The volunteer program is built around eight categories: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport, and technology.
Some jobs will require specialized skills. LA28 says that includes roles for people with medical training and people who can translate languages.
LA28 says the application portal was created with Deloitte. The program is sponsored by Delta Air Lines.
Where volunteers will work
Most of the volunteer jobs will be in the Los Angeles area, according to LA28. But the committee says volunteers will also be needed at other host sites, including Oklahoma City and soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José, and San Diego.
LA28 has said the Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14 to July 30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games are scheduled for Aug. 15 to Aug. 27, 2028.
The committee says volunteer service will not be limited to those exact competition dates. Public coverage from Reuters, the Associated Press, NBC Sports and other outlets, based on LA28’s announcement, said Olympic volunteers are expected to serve from March through August 2028, with Paralympic volunteers serving from August through September 2028.
How the application process works
LA28 says people who already expressed interest will get an email with next steps, but anyone can apply, even if they did not register earlier.
The committee also says it will give at least seven days’ notice before applications close.
LA28 has not yet released a full breakdown of how many volunteers it needs in each city or at each venue, and it has not published final selection rules in the materials released Tuesday.
Why LA28 is doing this now
The application launch marks the start of a public push to build the workforce that will help the Games run day to day.
LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover told Reuters that recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people” and that volunteers will be a key part of that experience.
For Los Angeles, the rollout is also a reminder that the Games are getting closer. LA28 says the volunteer program includes not just competition roles, but also community volunteering tied to local organizations in Los Angeles, with a focus on sustainability, restoration, and the wellbeing of venue cities.
That means the volunteer effort is meant to be both practical and civic-minded: part staffing plan, part community project, and part welcome mat for the world.
