WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — Visitors to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington soon will be able to enter a hidden 15,000-square-foot exhibit space beneath the monument for the first time, as the National Park Service says the undercroft opens to the public June 25 with timed-entry access.
The underground space has been closed since the memorial opened in 1922. The Park Service says the exhibit area will include interactive displays and multimedia presentations about the memorial’s construction and its place in American history and civil rights, and that the project is being funded in partnership with the National Park Foundation.
Admission is free, but advance reservations carry a $1 service fee. Tickets can be booked on Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, and same-day tickets will be distributed starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Korean War Veterans Memorial kiosk on Daniel Chester French Drive, just south of the Lincoln Memorial.
